With a unanimous vote, Asbury’s Church Council has approved a merger with Salem UMC of Allentown PA. The merger is set to go into effect on June 1, 2021.

The Charge Conference webinar for Asbury’s Church Council to formally vote on the merger with Salem UMC (Allentown) has been rescheduled to Wednesday, May 5, at 5 PM via Zoom. Learn more and register at asburylv.org/merger.
In accordance with para 2546 of the 2016 UM Book of Discipline, Merger of Local United Methodist Churches – a special Charge Conference is being held by Allentown: Asbury UMC, called by Superintendent Steven Morton,for the purpose of considering a proposal to merge with the congregation at Allentown: Salem UMC:
Wednesday, May 5 at 5 PM.
All are welcome to attend but only the elected members of the current church council are responsible for voting on the proposal (para 246.2).
The Charge Conference scheduled for Thursday, March 18, to vote on the proposed merger between Asbury and Salem UMC (Allentown) is being postponed. This postponement is due to a delay in the sale of the Salem real estate that includes their church building and parsonage. The new Charge Conference date will be announced as soon as possible.

“Salem UMC has done amazing things to be the hands and feet of Christ in Center City Allentown,” says Pastor Eric, and notes that some of their financial resources will be set aside for use for ministry in Center City Allentown.
Salem UMC previously met on Linden Street in Allentown. Their first service was held in 1817 but the Salem Church was officially established in 1838.
