DEHYDRATION occurs when the body loses more fluids than it takes in!! Sounds simple enough but the problems can range from a mild headache and fatigue to severe organ failure and death.
CAUSES: insufficient fluid intake
excessive sweating from hot weather / exercise or fever
excessive vomiting and diarrhea
certain medications that promote urination especially diuretics (water pills)
SYMPTOMS: Headache / dizziness
Fatigue
Dry mouth and throat
Decreased urine output or dark, foul-smelling urine
Tongue appears white or yellow and very dry (cotton mouth)
THIRST is the LAST symptom
Treatment: Drink plenty of fluids (water / juices / electrolytes)
If experiencing nausea and vomiting, take SMALL sips FREQUENTLY
Seek medical attention if the problem persists. You may need intravenous (IV) therapy
PREVENTION:
• Avoid excess caffeine or alcohol which can increase dehydration if you are exercising a lot, have a fever, or are out in the blazing sun
• Eat fruits and vegetables that contain water (watermelon / cucumbers / melons/ grapes/ spinach)
• Drink more during exercise or hot conditions
REMEMBER:
• ELDERLY and INFANTS are more prone to dehydration
• In certain “cold” seasons you might NOT get thirsty, but your body still needs fluids!
• If you are ill with a fever you might not want to drink more… sip… sip… sip
• If you are enjoying the ocean/pool at a resort and drinking more alcohol than normal your body can become dehydrated
