a message from Asbury’s Health Ministry Team
Pastor Eric recently spoke about what the Bible says about the topic of income inequality during his “Contentious Issues” sermon series.
Social determinants of health (SDOH) are the conditions in the environments where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, functioning, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. Research has shown that social determinants of health significantly affect health outcomes.
One of Healthy People 2030’s five overarching goals is specifically related to SDOH: “Create social, physical, and economic environments that promote attaining the full potential for health and well-being for all.” Specific goals related to this overarching goal include:
1) Help people earn steady incomes that allow them to meet their health needs
2) Increase educational opportunities and help children and adolescents do well in school
3) Create neighborhoods and environments that promote health and safety
4) Increase social and community support; and
5) Increase access to comprehensive, high-quality health care services.
