Asbury Church is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The Methodist Church from its founding has had a pretty amazing history. The denomination unintentionally started with a man named John Wesley. John definitely wasn’t a perfect guy but he did some pretty great things. Wesley stressed things like social justice AND personal salvation at the same time…something not often done by the church then or today.
United Methodists share a common heritage with other Christians, holding to the historic essentials of the Christian faith which are summed up in the Apostles Creed:
We believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord:
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried.On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.Amen.

Asbury Church, The United Methodist Church, and Human Sexuality
In 2024, the United Methodist Church’s General Conference made a number of significant changes to the denomination’s guiding principles, including the removal of a 40-year ban on the ordination of clergy who are “self-avowed practicing homosexuals” and making changes to the denomination’s Social Principles to affirm support “for the equal rights, liberties, and protections of all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.” Click the links above to learn more; and read about decisions made at General Conference on the UMNews website.
At Asbury, we believe all persons are individuals of sacred worth, created in the image of God. We welcome people of all identifications, orientations, and backgrounds to be part of this body of believers.
While the United Methodist Church has allowed for churches to leave the denomination (“disaffiliate”) if their beliefs do not align with those of the denomination, Asbury has no intention of leaving the denomination; and Pastor Eric is also not leaving the United Methodist Church.
