A Note from Asbury’s Board of Trustees: “Coffee with a Cop”
Asbury’s Board of Trustees has been working on the topic of church security for the past several months. Many discussions have taken place, experts were brought in to complete facility assessments, and staff and committee members have attended several local “House of Worship” security seminars.
Asbury does have a security system in place to deal with general safety needs during our work day hours. Our newly established Safety Committee has begun to review safety measures for non-work day hours, including evening and weekend activities. One of the first recommendations discussed was to invite our local police into Asbury during Sunday service times, to walk around to become familiar with our facilities, to talk with members and guests and to enjoy a cup of coffee. This is meant to build a working relationship with our local police as well as to implement a “low-level” preventative strategy at little to no cost. So, if you see a SWT (South Whitehall Township) Police Officer in the building, please do not be alarmed. Instead, take the time to say “Hi” and introduce yourself, and invite him/her to the community room for a cup of coffee. Be sure to thank him/her for their service to our community!
